What I'm reading, watching, and listening to this week

I often wish I had a backup brain to absorb all of the books, articles, movies, TV, and music that exists today. There's just too much good stuff out there right now–and all of it is available, literally, at my fingertips. The little electronic rectangle I take with me everywhere has everything I need: Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Tumblr, Pinterest, Spotify, Instagram, theSkimm, Apple Podcasts, Audible, Pocket. . . the list goes on. It's no secret we're in an information overload, and it certainly has its costs–both mentally and financially. However, at least we have access to the best artistic and entertainment endeavors in ways we never did before.

All that to say, here's what I'm into this week.

Reading

I am so glad I stumbled upon this because I'm an avid Shark Tank fan and I've always recognized when Mark Cuban condescendingly says "right?" whenever he explains his point of view. I sleep better at night knowing somebody else noticed this and took the time to really unpack what it means so I don't have to.

One of my favorite email newsletters has put out a weekly, topical sub-newsletter all about retail and shopping, which is right up my alley. I am really enjoying their content so far.

As a former employee at a large Christian publishing house, I found this to be an interesting read. Some of my former colleagues are quoted. It's crazy to see even the most traditional industries and products getting revamped for the Instagram world.

Let it be known that I am obsessed with Lizzo. Her music has been getting me through some dark days lately and helping me stay positive when my confidence is at a low.

An interesting piece about political campaign branding and how Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg is changing the game.

Watching

I've only watched the first episode of this 4-part Netflix series, but I cannot stop thinking about it. I was familiar with the story of the Central Park 5, but after listening to director Ava DuVernay discuss the doc on Fresh Air, I was intrigued even more. Honestly, the first episode was obviously quite emotional, which is why I haven't yet watched the rest of the episodes–I feel like I want to block off some uninterrupted time to watch the rest and really take it in. I did, however, watch Oprah's interview with all of the cast members and the actual exonerated five men, which brought more tears.

Big Little Lies season two premiere (TV)

Although I haven't read the book (it's on my list!) I loved the first season of BLL. The acting was impeccable, the plot was enticing (I was definitely one of the viewers who did not expect the ending), and the characters were believable. Looking forward to seeing what Meryl brings to season two.

A movie about late night television written by and starring Mindy Kaling? I'm in. I really enjoyed this movie and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I thought the writing was solid and enjoyed all the performances.

I had high hopes for Booksmart as I'm a fan of the two lead actresses, along with Olivia Wilde who directed it. I enjoyed the film overall but found the writing to be lacking. There was so much potential for gold in the storyline that fell short me. It certainly isn't as funny as Superbad, the movie that many are comparing it to. . . but it'll be a decent Netflix watch in a few months.

Listening

I will literally listen/read/watch anything about both Will Ferrell and JLD. They both are comedy heroes of mine whom I admire greatly.

Not to be repetitive, but... Armchair Expert with Aubrey Plaza

I promise I listen to other podcasts... BUT I think Aubrey Plaza is one of the most interesting people in showbiz. Just give this ep a listen and see why.

I truly can't stand Kara Swisher as an interviewer but I suffer through it for the fascinating convos she has with big tech leaders on Recode Decode, like this one with AWS CEO Andy Jassy.

And that's it for this week! At least, that's all I will post considering I keep adding and updating this as I discover new things. More to come.
